Ayers Animal Hospital, Inc., WV

Description of Elective Experience:

Student will have a varied clinical experience. We are an accreditied AAHA small animal hospital since 1997, with 5 DVM's.  We do many types of surgery and most procedures are done with laser.  We offer abdominal US as well as echo.  We have digital radiography both for general diagnostics and dental.  The student will not only shadow our doctors but will be given the opportunity to perform some routine surgery, examine, diagnose and devise treatment plans with our clinicians .  We see some exotics if they  are interested in that as well.  We all enjoy teaching and learning and generally attend several seminars each year.  I have had several intense Ultrasound courses in abdominal and cardiac imaging. We have high quality Storz endoscope and one of our doctors has had extensive training with that.  So the student would be exposed to a wide variety of learning with hands on experience.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

As mentioned above, 5 fulltime DVM's, large support staff with surgical and outpatient teams to assist the doctors.  We are very well equipped with almost new surgical laser unit, class 4 laser, Fugi digital x-ray system with capability of sending out for  cloud storage and for transmission to OSU and or Pet Rays for telemedicine consults. Storz endoscopy, GE Logic for general US and echo.  Intensive care unit with climate controlled/oxygen nebulization capabilites.  Separate isolation unit for infectious disease cases.  Mutiple computer stations with AviMark system and we are basically paperless now.  We have an extensive library of printed books, internet access to information, and receive several veterinary journals each month.   All of our doctors have many hours of continueing education each year and enjoy learning and teaching others. We have 6 exam rooms, well supplied in house pharmacy, spacious waiting room area. We are equipped with several Abaxis Hematology and blood chemistry machines as well as Idexx Urinalyis analyzer .

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We would want the student to be available Monday through Friday from 8 am till finished in the evenings. They should be  courteous, have a team player attitude  and enjoy being taught.  Shadowing will be important ,but the opportunity for lots of hands on experience will be granted.  We feel you learn by doing.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

We do not have on site housing, but may be able to help with housing as well.
