Description of Elective Experience: 

Banfield's externship program gives students an idea of what it is like to work in a corporate small animal practice that focuses on preventive care. The student will be able to shadow doctors but also be hands on and develop their technical skills. We will typically sit down on the first day and go over the student's goals for the externship so that we can tailor the experience as much as possible to the individual students' needs. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

-Dentistry, Soft tissue surgery, preventive care visits, ill/ sick patient visits, preparing lab samples , restraining patients. 

-currently 2 full time DVMs + veterinary assistants + PM 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Typically our externships are 40 hours per week, usually 4 ten hour days. We are open Monday-Saturday 8a-6p. Typically students will be expected to work every other Saturday. 

Students will have the opportunity to shadow doctors but also can be hands on with blood draws, restraint, physical exams, lab work, scrubbing into surgery, monitoring anesthesia, scaling teeth etc.
