During this elective offsite rotation, the student will be exposed to the typical caseload of a busy small animal practice. This will include wellness exams, sick visits, routine and non-routine surgeries as well as dental procedures. The student may be asked to obtain histories and perform physical exams with goal of developing differential diagnoses and treatment plans. Depending on the case, there may also be opportunities to scrub into surgery to assist at the discretion of the supervising veterinarian.
Students should arrive enthusiastic and prepared to discuss all aspects of small animal veterinary medicine. When possible, they will be involved in patient care and client communication at the discretion of the supervising veterinarian. The experience will consist of a minimum of 40 hours per week with days typically starting at 8am. Students are expected to dress and behave in a professional manner. Appropriate dress may include business casual (slacks/khakis and dress shirt with lab coat or surgical scrubs if preferred).
