Bigger Road Veterinary Center, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Bigger Road Veterinary Center has two locations with one situated in Kettering, which is a suburb of Dayton, and the other in Springboro, Ohio.  We have a large volume caseload, and we maintain a commitment to high quality of medicine.  Our doctors place emphasis on continuing education.  Our large caseload would allow a prospective veterinary student extern to observe a wide variety of common and less-common clinical presentations first-hand.

We have 8 doctors, 10 technicians and a large pool of support staff.  One of our doctors is Board-Certified in canine and feline practice by the ABVP.  We have ultrasound, endoscopy, dental radiography, surgical laser, in-house lab equipment, computerization, abundant anesthetic monitoring equipment, and we are proud of our comprehensive pain management plans.  We are AAHA-accredited.

Some of our special interests include reproductive medicine, endoscopy, ear disease, dentistry, and orthopedic surgery.  We are diagnosis-oriented, so an extern would have the opportunity to observe and discuss thorough case work-ups.

We are Fear-Free certified, as well as a Feline Friendly practice.

Please call for more information.  Bigger Road Veterinary Clinic is an ideal environment for a student to gain a lot of practical experience!

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

One veterinarian ABVP board-certified in Canine and Feline, who is also pursuing board-certification in dentistry.

We have a full, current library of small animal medicine and surgery texts.  We have access to VIN and use its resources often.  An extern would have opportunities to have case rounds with doctors when requested or deemed important by the supervising doctor.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The extern would have direct, hands-on contact with hospitalized and out-patients, would assist with routine and non-routine surgeries, and would assist the supervising doctor during appointment times.  We have 53 hours of operation per week; the extern would be expected to participate in at least 40-50 of those hours per week.  The extern would be expected to make the most of his/her experience by asking questions, offering input at appropriate times, studying up on unfamiliar surgical procedures or disease processes that will likely be encountered, and by working hard.

Students will be guided by one of our doctors each day, but will be encouraged to observe or to help out in all of our departments including veterinary technicians and assistants.
