BluePearl Veterinary Partners Arizona

Description of Elective Experience:

The Arizona BluePearl Veterinary Partners is a group of five 24-hour small animal emergency hospitals in Phoenix and the surrounding area. We are a fast-paced hospital with a large caseload and a variety of both medical and surgical cases. Despite the pressure of emergency medicine, we offer a friendly atmosphere and enjoy mentoring and assisting one another with challenging cases.

Our emergency doctors perform a variety of surgeries and manage complex medicine and critical cases. Doctors have twice daily cageside rounds, which provide the opportunity for externs to learn and ask questions about case management. Some of our most common surgical emergencies include GDV’s, dystocias, pyometras, foreign bodies (gastrotomy and enterotomy), hemoabomen, and bite wound explore/repair. Other common emergencies include blocked cats, diabetic ketoacidosis, pancreatitis, anemia, trauma, toxicities, heat stroke, and rattlesnake envenomation

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have board certified emergency and critical care specialists available for consulting on cases and over 20 doctors on staff. We have digital radiography, ultrasound, CT and in-house bloodwork.  Most of our student externs spend the majority of their time at our Gilbert clinic.  The Gilbert clinic offers additional learning opportunities, as we have access to board-certified specialists in surgery, internal medicine, cardiology, ophthalmology, oncology, dermatology, radiology and dentistry.

There is access to full library of current veterinary books at all four clinics, as well as on-line access to VIN and a variety of veterinary journals. There is an active BluePearl Veterinary Partners rotating internship program. Externs  have access to weekly intern-focused continuing education seminars and journal book club, which are typically held at the Gilbert location.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to take initiative and have a sincere interest in emergency medicine. They will shadow staff veterinarians and follow incoming and hospitalized cases. They may also scrub into surgery and gain experience with interpretation of bloodwork and radiographs. It is also expected that the extern pitch in and help with cleaning, organizing and restraint.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Students are expected to find their own housing as BluePearl does not currently provide housing for students.
