Bovine Veterinary Services, NM (PC)

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a 100% bovine practice located in southeastern New Mexico, but provide large animal veterinary services to west Texas and western Oklahoma. Approximately 90% of our work focuses on dairy cattle reproduction, nutrition, management, herd health, milking protocols, and treatment protocols. The other 10% of our focus is beef cow work, including cow calf management and stocker management. We also have an in house milk lab for culturing samples and troubleshooting mastitis issues.

Students will have the opportunity to accompany one or more of our six veterinarians to interact with our producers/clients on daily scheduled farm appointments. They will be able to aid in pregnancy detection, breeding soundness exams, lameness evaluations, routine vaccinations,  as well as the evaluation/diagnosis of sick cattle and dermination of surgical or medical treatment. Students will also be able to accompany our veterinarians on emergency calls to aid with emergency surgery, necropsy,  dystocias, laceration repair, etc...

Times and dates available are on a first come first serve basis. We are already scheduling out to 2018.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Have a full text and media library that will be available to students throughout duration of internship. 24 hour access to our veterinarians. Each veterinarian has a mobile veterinary unit fully stocked to fulfill obligations to our producers.
