Description of Elective Experience: 

Students will spend time rotating between the hospital and ambulatory services, with one of 8 senior doctors, along side our 3-4 interns. Senior doctors include 3 boarded surgeons, 1 boarded internist, 4 ambulatory practitioners (one of whom specializes in dentistry, two who are heavily trained in reproduction, two certified in acupuncture, and one certified in chiropractic). Hospital caseload consists largely of colics, elective soft tissue surgery, and elective orthopedic cases as well as several (3-6/day on average) outpatient lamenesses/ultrasounds. Ambulatory work includes wellness, dentistry, lameness and prepurchase examinations, and smaller numbers of medicine-based cases (respiratory, endocrine, neurologic).

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The clinic has 25 support staff (technicians, receptionist, , and the hospital is staffed 24/7 for care of hospitalized patients. Equipment includes 3 digital radiography units, 2 digital ultrasounds, ESWT, a lameness locator, 1m and 3m endoscopes, arthroscopy, full surgical suite, an ambulatory dental trailer, and a fully stocked sports medicine complex with PRP and IRAP capabilities. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Days typically start at 6:30-7 AM and appointments will last until 4-5 on average. Students have the opportunity to participate in after hours emergencies both in the hospital and with the ambulatory service, both during the week and on weekends. Depending on experience, externs will have the ability to actively participate in wellness appointments, outpatient cases, and surgical cases, among others. 

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Housing is free, and includes bed, shower, microwave, toaster oven, refrigerator, sink, etc. There are numerous restaurants and grocery stores within a short walking distance. Pets are not allowed in the clinic.
