Description of Elective Experience: 

The externships at the Brazos Valley Equine Hospital – Navasota are 2 to 6 week programs designed to provide hands on experience for students. The extern will have the opportunity to sharpen their diagnostic and decision-making skills in equine medicine, surgery and intensive care, gain experience in routine procedures and advanced diagnostics, as well as develop confidence in interacting with staff and other veterinarians. Working in a fast-paced, friendly environment with the large caseload at our hospital can be very rewarding and educational.

Arthroscopy (traditional and needle scope), laparoscopy, endoscopy (standing and dynamic), ultrasound (musculoskeletal, GI, cardio), digital radiography, critical care monitoring equipment, dedicated ICU, advanced in-house laboratory, advanced dentistry equipment, fully stocked pharmacy

Reference library and on-line journal article access. Daily stall-side case rounds. On-site continuing education and client seminars that externs are invited to participate in when scheduled.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 
  1. Assisting in daily evaluation of and treatments for hospitalized cases
    under the supervision of interns and staff veterinarians
  2. Participation in outpatient appointments, including exposure to lameness evaluations and sports medicine management; ophthalmic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, and cardiology examinations; emergency, management; and reproductive and neonatal care.
  3. Externs are expected to participate in overnight care of hospitalized cases, including critical evaluation, monitoring and treatments; as well as participate in all emergencies.
  4. Participation in daily case rounds and seminar/journal club discussions.
  5. Students are expected to ask questions and prepare a list of procedures they would like to perform.
Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

There is a dedicated co-ed living area at the hospital provided at no cost. No pets allowed. The interns also live onsite. There is a washer, dryer and a  kitchen available. We are 5 to 10 minute drive to a grocery store or restaurant.
