Description of Elective Experience: 

Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals Internship and Externship programs are anything but traditional. Because of our staff’s unique specialties, multiple locations, and versatile clientele, students have the opportunity to gain the exposure needed to excel in this profession. Our industry-leading equine veterinarians offer an extensive variety of services ranging from the standard preventative care to cutting-edge, specialty surgery. The goal of the externship is to provide high level exposure to broaden the interests and skills of veterinary students like you. As an extern, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a fast-paced, friendly environment. This program will provide you with enough clinical exposure to identify your specific areas of interest and further pursue those studies in equine medicine.

Who is this program for?

● The veterinarian student who has a desire to accelerate his/her growth, a general interest and experience in equine medicine, surgery, along with a basic knowledge of horsemanship.

● The recent graduate who is interested in our internship program since the externship program is the primary method of critical evaluation used for internship selection by the hospital.

● Veterinarians who are new to the U.S. - foreign students and veterinarians are welcomed and encouraged to apply. But, you must have the ability to communicate in English and obtain the appropriate visas.

What can I expect to gain from this externship:

● The opportunity to sharpen your diagnostic and decision-making skills in equine medicine, surgery and intensive care, gain experience in routine procedures and advanced diagnostics, as well as develop confidence in interacting with staff and other veterinarians.

Where is the program and how long is it?

● We offer up to 4 weeks at our Stephenville, Navasota, or Salado, Texas locations.

What will I be doing in this program? Your primary duties include:

● Assisting with daily treatments

● Evaluations and record keeping for hospitalized patients

● Assisting staff veterinarians in lameness exams, surgeries, dentistry, reproduction and neonatal care

● Night duties consisting of assisting with patient treatments, intensive care monitoring, as well as, assisting with all emergencies including weekends and holidays

● Assisting with both clinical and ambulatory emergencies

● Assisting with appointments from 8am - 5pm Monday-Friday and 8am -12pm on Saturdays

● Working with interns and technicians to treat hospitalized patients in the mornings, and administer overnight treatments

● Aiding staff veterinarians in outpatient visits

● Working in a fast-paced, friendly environment with the large caseload at one of our hospitals can be very rewarding and educational. We strongly believe in teaching and mentoring, which is why you will always be working directly with our technicians, veterinary staff and other professionals.
