Description of Elective Experience: 

Privately owned and operated, our three AAHA-accredited hospitals provide full-service small animal general medicine, surgery, theriogenology, and urgent care services. Our externship program offers students comprehensive exposure to a variety of disciplines in a fast-paced private practice setting. Students can expect to become familiar with the practice of veterinary medicine through participation in client communication, hospital operations, and medical and surgical services.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Students will be exposed to soft tissue, laparoscopic and other surgical procedures including the hospital’s highly-regarded orthopedic services. Additionally, Broadview offers the unique opportunity for students to gain experience in our distinguished theriogenology department. Students can also rotate through learning opportunities in general practice medicine, exotic animal health, and urgent care.

Our hospitals are equipped with CT, digital radiography, ultrasound, arthroscopy, endoscopy, laparoscopy, a full laboratory. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students can expect to become familiar with the practice of veterinary medicine through hands-on participation, applying knowledge and skills learned in the classroom to a range of cases. 

  • Applicants must be third or fourth-year students of accredited domestic or international veterinary schools, pursuing a DVM, VMD or foreign equivalent.
  • Externship periods are 1-3 weeks, with extensions possible
  • Our hospitals are open 7-days per week, allowing externs to experience a flexible schedule 
  • Externs can expect to begin work by 8:00am, working up to 12-hour shifts 
Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Students are responsible for facilitating their own transportation and making arrangements for their own housing. There are several short-term lodging options near our hospital locations. Housing options may be provided by the hospital, upon request.
