Students will be exposed to all aspects of a rural mixed animal practice. We are a very busy 2 1/2 doctor practice. A large portion of our business is small animal, but one veterinarian is an exclusive large animal practitioner.
Student will be allowed to assist and even perform some basic surgery and routine care depending on student's level of experience.
We are not a fancy practice, but we are very hands on and press upon the student the need to use their skill set to come up with a diagnostic plan and possible treatment options by using their minds and exam skills before moving on to diagnositics. ie.. we come up with a list of possible causes before we move onto further baseline test... bloodwork, urinalysis, fecal, radiology, etc.
If you are looking for CT scans and MRI options, this practice is not for you.
We are a very rural practice, but our doctors have been practicing for 20, 21, and over 40 years in mixed animal practice.
We have in house blood machines, radiology and very basic ultrasound.
We start work between 7:30 and 8:30 depending on time of year and most days we are done by 5 depending on emergencies. We work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, some Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturday 8 -Noon.
Students will do some shadowing, but most of the time we will make students do a physical exam and come up with a plan before we even even examine and discuss the patient.
We are all about the student and developing their examination skills.
