Caprine & Ewe Veterinary Consulting, PC, MI

Description of Elective Experience:

We generally see a mixture of wellness/herd evaluations/annual VCPR visits and medical concerns daily for an average of about 4-5 farm visits per day serving anywhere from 10-35 patients per day. During the fall our practice does a fair amount of reproductive management, including genetic/breed planning, estrus synchronization protocols, artificial insemination, and early gestation management (ultrasound monitoring for pregnancy confirmation, estimated fetal numbers and nutrition planning)

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Caprine & Ewe Veterinary Consulting is a small ruminant mobile veterinary practice located in Northville, Michigan. We currently have 1 full time veterinarian and 4 part time veterinary assistants.

Our mobile practice offers many services including: preventative care for all life stages, personalized wellness plans, nutritional consultations, vaccinations, microchipping, euthanasia services, soft tissue surgery, spays/neuters, dental prophylaxis, digital dental radiographs, dental extractions, and dental sealants. We also offer ultrasound, digital radiographs and in house laboratory tests.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

While here, an extern should expect approx. 30-40 hours per work week (Monday through Friday); occasional emergency appointments on nights and weekends. The extern should expect to receive experience doing a number of things: assisting with patient appointments, practicing small ruminant exam skills, discussing assessments and plans for both wellness and medical concerns, communicating with clients about medical services and patient plans, assisting in on farm surgeries (including but not limited to castrations, disbudding, de-horning, wound care, C-sections, etc.), team collaboration for many aspects of care, medical record management, etc.

While the extern student is here performing their externship, their supervisor will be Melissa Holahan, DVM, DACVECC. However, when opportunities arise, the extern will be welcome to work with several other area large animal veterinarians (while traveling with Dr. Holahan) to ensure he/she has access to as many real-life situations as we can provide during his/her time with us. Prior externs have been able to observe bovine DA surgeries, plasma transfusions for crias, and witness the successful grafting of an orphaned foal to a nurse mare.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Student housing is provided if necessary at no cost to the student. This housing will include an apartment with full amenities (water/bath, lighting, electric, etc.) Student will have to provide food/groceries for their time here.
