Busy small animal ER and specialty clinic with specialists in surgery (2), internal medicine, radiology, oncology, and anesthesiology. Average caseload 40 emergencies per day with 10 - 12 inpatients. Students shadow the emergency doctors and senior nursing staff. Proficient students will be invited to perform procedures, such as laceration repairs, urinary catheter placement, thoracocentesis, etc, and assist with emergency soft-tissue surgeries.
There is always a doctor in the building with 3+ support staff. We employ 9 FTE ER doctors and specialists in surgery (2), internal medicine, radiology, oncology, and anesthesiology. The hospital is equipped with multi-parameter monitors, Snyder oxygen cages, High Flow Oxygen Therapy, CT/MRI, fluoroscopy, and full in-house laboratory equipment.
Students are expected to work four 12 hour shifts or four 10 hour shifts per week. Shift times can vary from first shift (6a-6p), swing shift (12/2p-12/2a) or overnight (6p - 6a). Students will initially start by shadowing, but proficient students will be able to participate in procedures and hands-on care. In addition to working with the doctors, we expect students will participate in the nursing care of inpatients, particularly on overnight shifts when incoming ER caseload may wane. Students will be expected to participate in medical record-keeping and client communication.
