Feline only practice for the past 26 years, overall 36 yrs experience. We believe that we excel in the handling of cats and creating as comfortable an experience as possible. Student would shadow Doctor and learn my style of exam, interacting with clients and patients. Decide on a course of treatment/laboratory work on his/her own then discuss with doctor. Learn and execute the handling of different personalities of cats. Learn about surgery in a private practice setting, and to get some hands on experience with direct supervision of doctor. Develop an understanding about how a practice operates, providing quality care but still generating an income. Student would observe the interaction of Dr and employees, and between employees for the smooth operation of the practice and delivering a quality service to clients, giving the clients a sense of comfort and satisfaction.
Currently have one doctor and 4 staff members, all staff members do all tasks necessary. Everyone is crosstrained.
Hospital is fully computerized but we still utilize paper medical records as we feel it is more efficient for our style of practice. Full digital radiography, dental suite, laser surgery, therapy laser, in house blood testing for critical items and a monitor for surgical anesthesia.
Student would be responsible for being punctual; Hours would be 9-5 with an hour lunch, M, T, TH, F, we are closed on Wednesdays.
Would expect student to shadow in the exam room, all treatments, surgeries, etc. Would be expected to help with restraint, doing blood draws, placing catheters, etc. I believe doctors needs to be skilled in the many technical skills needed. I would want the student to be actively involved in cases and develop a plan by themselves then discuss with the doctor. Also I would be picking the student's brain for anything new that may just be coming out from a university.
