Cattle Health Management by Telus Agriculture and Consumer Goods, Canada

Description of Elective Experience: 

We are a cattle only practice that provides health and nutrition services for feedlot, dairy, and cow/calf operations.  Our goal is to assist clients in obtaining optimal animal health, production, and welfare while supporting economic returns through efficient production animal management.  Students will have opportunity to gain experiences in each of our focus areas based on their individual interests. We have a strong team of veterinarians, nutritionists, and consultant assistants with many years of experience. We are committed to providing students with knowledge and hands on experience related to bovine medicine and production.  

The fall rotation will involve feedlot consulting, routine feedlot visits, sick animal exams, necropsies, basic nutrition consultation, pregnancy diagnosis, fetal staging, dairy consultation, body condition scoring, a small number of bull breeding soundness exams, and various sick animal exams and surgical procedures.  

In addition to much of the fall rotation, the spring rotation will have opportunity to be involved in dystocia management, rectal/vaginal/uterine prolapse replacement, heifer palpation, bull breeding soundness evaluation, fixed‐time AI program consulting, and neonatal disease consultation and management.  

Student will spend time with many different individual team members to obtain a diverse experience and perspective.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We have a strong team of veterinarians, nutritionists, and consultant assistants with ~40 individuals working out of our Lethbridge office area.  We have facilities on site for hauling in cattle and we are setup for emergency work on site.  We have diverse equipment to provide comprehensive service to bovine clients.   

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student will be responsible to assist and support as needed depending on the veterinarian and client.  They will participate in all aspects of the operation.  

Regular office hours are 8AM-4:30PM Monday - Friday.  After hours and weekend emergencies are not required, however students are welcome to participate based on their interests after hours.  

Casual office dress.  Boots and coveralls required.  Weather appropriate clothing and footwear for the time of year.  

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Free housing for students may or may not be available depending on the availability at the time.  Some employees have spare rooms for students whom are interested.  Alternative, there are many local hotels and rentals available.
