Central West Virginia Animal Hospital, WV

Description of Elective Experience:

Central West Virginia Animal Hospital is a progressive, single doctor practice in rural West Virginia. Externs will work closely with the doctor throughout the day. We hope to give the extern as many opportunities to gain hands-on practice with clinical skills and surgery depending on their understanding and comfort-level with such tasks. As the only veterinary clinic in the area, we see a wide range of both small and large animal cases.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

In house Idexx blood and urine analysis

Idexx Cornerstone scheduling software

K-laser, large animal haul in facility

Digital radiology

Full support staff

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Our regular business hours are typically Monday through Friday. We do not see after hours or weekend emergencies. Students would be expected to work through some cases on their own and present their findings and plans to the doctor. We hope to make this experience as close to real life practice as possible in that we encourage the extern to use resources and their own knowledge to make clinical decisions.
