Clemson University Livestock Poultry Health, SC

Description of Elective Experience: 

Clemson University Livestock Poultry Health (LPH) is located in Columbia (center of South Carolina). There are 3 sections: Animal Health Programs, Clemson Veterinary Diagnostic Center (CVDC), and SC Meat and Poultry Inspection Department (SCMPID). This rotation involves interaction with Animal Health Programs veterinarians, SC State Veterinarian, CVDC pathologists, and SCMPID veterinarians.  The student will travel to livestock/poultry producers, livestock auction markets, and LPH activities to ensure compliance with all South Carolina and Federal regulations. Rotation often includes the Clemson Veterinary Diagnostic Center with livestock necropsies and subsequent testing.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

LPH typical days are Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Evening or weekend educational meetings may occur during the rotation. Student will be with LPH staff during their rotation. At the end of the rotations, the student is requested to either present on a case or event that they were involved, or work on a section of the state disease plan.

Dr. Scharko offers a bedroom and bathroom in her house to students doing rotations at LPH.
