Colonial Animal Clinic, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Small animal medicine and surgery in a small town in southern Ohio where many clients have financial concerns. We try to schedule  trap/ neuter /release cats for students so that students can scrub in for cat spays and neuters.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have digital radiographs, a hand-held ultrasound  machine, and a  Tonopen.

We have 2 part time and 1 full time veterinarian.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student would be at the clinic 4 days a week from 8:30 AM  until 5 PM. Most evenings,  we have appointments  until 6:30 PM if the student wants to see additional  cases. Most of the experience  would be shadowing, but we will allow the student to place catheters, draw blood, perform physical examinations, cystocentesis, urinalysis, fecal exams, heartworm tests. FeLV/ FIV tests and administer injections .

The majority of our surgeries are spays, neuters and lump removals. We do quite a few pyometra surgeries.
