Companion Animal Hospital of Kenosha is offering Externships for senior veterinary students beginning May 2019.

Companion Animal Hospital of Kenosha is certified by the American Animal Hospital Association.  We have 3 talented doctors supported by top-notch technicians and veterinary assistants practicing progressive medicine. The team at our hospital believes that it is important that pet owners understand all aspects of their pet’s physical condition in sickness and in health.  The staff offers a wide range of practice viewpoints and experiences. We offer a full range of medical and surgical services.  We offer ultrasonography, a fully equipped surgical center, two dental tables, digital radiography including dental radiography, and lab testing.

Externship Details

Length of externships – 2 – 4 weeks

 

Externship Experience

Come to a multi-doctor small animal hospital to gain real life clinical experience in a fast paced but mentoring environment in our brand new 6,000 sq. ft. building.   Be exposed to small animal clinicians from 20 plus years of experience to recent graduates. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to: observing and assisting in soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries; performing spay and neuters with our local rescues; assisting in exam rooms; performing physical examinations on client owned pets; analyzing in house and reference clinical and pathologic lab results; interpreting radiographs and ultrasounds; assisting in dental cleanings, interpreting dental radiographs, learning the fundamentals of simple and surgical extraction of teeth.  Lastly, if an animal needs to be hospitalized overnight you will oversee its care.

You will be assigned to a veterinary mentor for the entire externship period. We expect you to work alongside doctors for 20 to 25 hours per week.  The other part of that time you will assist our nursing staff with patient care.

Housing

We offer a fully furnished apartment with a kitchen and bath/shower directly above the hospital.

Stipend

We offer a weekly stipend of $150 dollars.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Surgical suite, dental suite with digital radiography, ultrasound/endoscope suite, general digital radiography, full in house laboratory and Idexx reference laboratories, teaching microscope w/tablet, isolation ward, cat and dog wards, 7 exam rooms, paperless record system, in house library.  4 CVT's, 3 veterinary assistants.
