Comstock Equine Hospital is currently excepting externs for the 2023-2024 year. We gladly accept 1st-4th year students. Our veterinarians have years of experience mentoring young veterinary professionals and greatly enjoy the opportunity to teach. Externs participate in both in house and ambulatory cases, emergencies and assist during surgeries. We like to schedule 1-2 week externships as this provides the best timing for increased learning opportunities. We are located just outside of Reno in Pleasant Valley. With close proximity to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra National Forest.
Our facilities and equipment include: a surgery suite, digital radiology units, ultrasounds, arthroscopy, needle scope, endoscopy, shockwave and laser. We have 5 ICU stalls, 3 surgery stalls, 2 isolation stalls, a mare motel and grass paddocks.
During the externship, students are expected to attend each morning rounds and each afternoon rounds. Students are assigned to a doctor each day, either in the field or in hospital. Students may be asked to help handle an animal during an appointment or help the veterinary technician or assistant with appointment tasks. We will never ask a student to help with a task if they do not feel comfortable. The clinic is open 8am-5pm Monday through Friday and we also see emergencies after hours, students are asked to be at the clinic during normal business ours but we also encourage them to observe and help with night time emergencies if they feel comfortable.
We offer free housing onsite equipped with a microwave, mini fridge and hot plate. The onsite housing also includes a queen size bed, futon and full bathroom. We can accommodate students with pets but on a case by case basis.
