During a COPLOW externship, students can expect to participate in daily read-outs of current cases received from submitting veterinarians, learn about diagnosing ocular pathology lesions histologically, assist with grossing (trimming in the eyes and other tissues received), attend any rounds available, and learn about comparative ocular anatomy from the lab’s founder and professor emeritus, Dr. Richard Dubielzig.
The COPLOW has four Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, one lab technician, one lab manager (DVM), and several student workers. In addition, Dr. Richard Dubielzig (professor emeritus and founder of the COPLOW) is still actively engaged in the lab as a volunteer consultant. As a diagnostic pathology lab, our primary equipment includes microscopes and a fume hood in which specimens are trimmed.
Students will be expected to be in the lab about 40 hours per week. Hours may vary slightly, but a typical day would be 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with no evening or weekend hours. Please see "Description of Elective Experience" above for more information on responsibilities.
Though COPLOW does not provide housing directly, please note that we will provide several housing suggestions in our "COPLOW Visitor Orientation" document that will be sent to the student once their externship has been scheduled.
