Countryside Veterinary Service, P.C., MI

Description of Elective Experience:

Countryside Veterinary Service welcomes students to observe and participate in the large animal department of our practice.  Students will be making farm calls with a large animal veterinarian and will gain experiences with equine lameness, equine dentistry, radiographs, lameness exams, prepurchase exams, equine ultrasound, bovine reproductive ultrasound, dairy herd health, bovine surgeries, preventative medicine for both bovine and equine and more.  While the majority of our focus is equine and bovine, we also service caprine, ovine and porcine.  We strive to provide a learning environment that allows the student gain practical experience.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have a full large animals' staff including 7 large animal veterinarians and full office support staff.

Our equipment includes:  Digital radiography, equine ultrasound, bovine ultrasound, endoscope, power float, in-house blood machines, TB testing with hand held electronic equipment and more.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students will be required to start the day when the mentoring veterinarian's schedule dictates.  This can often be very early morning.  The student will be required to ride with that veterinarian until the day's farm calls are complete.  These have the potential to be long days.  Students will be attending weekly doctor staff meeting at the clinic.  There are evening emergencies and weekend emergencies that may be available if the student would like that experience.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Housing may be available.  Contact the clinic for details and availability.
