Description of Elective Experience: 

We are a very busy small animal clinic with extended hours.  We are a general practice, yet each veterinarian on staff has an area of special interest.  These areas include orthopedic surgery,  soft tissue surgery, dentistry, cardiology, feline medicine, ophthalmology, dermatology and endocrinology.  Students will have the opportunity to shadow the doctors of their choice.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We are a busy small animal clinic.  Although we do not have any board certified clinicians we do see a lot of referals from local clinics.  Capabilities include bone plating, TTA's, two ultrasound machines ( one abdominal and one for echocardiography/color flow doppler), digital videoendoscopy,  DR radiography,  in-house blood analyzers,  chemotherapy, ECG,  full dental suite.

We have 8 RVT's ,  5 receptionists and 5 support staff.

We are open to see our patients from 7AM to 10 PM Monday thru Thursday,  7 AM to 5:30 PM Friday and 7 AM to noon on Saturdays.  Scheduled surgeries and dentals are done during the first shift 7 AM to 1 PM.  An on-call surgeon performs emergency procedures as needed.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

During the 2 weeks externship the student will be expcted to work 8 hour shifts 5 days per week,  plus one Saturday morning.  At least one of the shifts per week will be during the second shift.  Students will mostly be shadowing doctors as they work through their case load  Hands on experience will be determined by the students capabilities.
