We are excited to offer our externship program to 3rd and 4th year veterinary students who are looking to reinforce their education with hands-on experience. Our program will assist you in your transition from veterinary school to the practice of veterinary medicine. Our externs work hand in hand with one of our 13 practicing veterinarians.
We are a 12,000 sq ft, full service, canine and feline veterinary hospital located in the North West region of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Hours of operation: 6:00 AM – 10:00 PM Monday through Sunday
Current staff size: 13 full time veterinarians, 16 licensed veterinary technicians, a hospital administrator, and 75 lay staff including: veterinary assistants, client greeters, phone coordinators and animal care takers
Services include: preventative wellness, sick pet care, emergency/critical care management, hospitalization, preventative and advanced surgery, laproscopic services, endoscopic services, comprehensive dental care – including endodontic therapy, breeding management, examinations for local animal shelter and mutiple breed specific rescue groups, care for Nevada’s US task force canines and local military working dogs, preceptor program accepted by US veterinary medical schools, medical boarding, routine boarding, and grooming
Equipment we have: digital radiology, digital dental radiology, full service in house laboratory - Abaxis – CBC/Chemistry capacity, Istat machine, PT/aPTT , Logic 5 ultrasound machine, ECG, critcal care/oxygen cages, state of the art isolation ward, full bone plating and screw systems, laproscopic and endoscopic surgical unit, Ligasure cauterization system, full in hospital pharmacy, CRI pumps, full stock of scheduled narcotics, and a paperless management software – Impromed Infinity.
Work Schedule: The schedule will be comprised of a 5 day work week: 4 weekdays and 1 weekend day. The daily attendance will be from 8am to 5pm. There will be adjustments made based on the hospital case load and mentoring doctor’s schedule.
Dress Code: Professional attire is to be worn under a laboratory coat. For surgical procedures scrub attire is appropriate.
Patient care responsibilities: Assisting veterinarian in medical cases, preventative health cases and surgical cases. Specifically: obtaining patient history, performing physical examinations, creating differential diagnoses, ordering and interpreting diagnostic test, creating treatment plans/estimates and medical recording of cases. The student will be asked to help with monitoring and treatment of all hospitalized patients. As many technical duties as possible will be asked of the student to increase their level of confidence and skill, including: venipunctures, cyctocentesis, intraveneous and urinary catheter placement, etc.
Personal responsibilities: to keep a running log of cases experienced while in our preceptor program, to turn in all university paperwork to preceptor in a timely manner to ensure accurate crediting and reporting to your school, to participate in a short exit interview on your experience at Craig Road Animal Hospital
A three bedroom house with Direct TV, WiFi, Playstation, full kitchen, and outside grill is availible at no cost to students on externships.
