Crank and Kirkpatrick Animal Hospital, WV

Description of Elective Experience: 

Crank & Kirkpatrick Animal Hospital is a mixed practice located in Henderson, West Virginia and 3 miles from Gallipolis, Ohio.  Our two-doctor practice performs 4-8 surgeries from 8 am -10 am as well as treating several sick cases.  Farm calls and most large animal appointments are scheduled from 10 am - 2 pm.  Office hours are double booked from 2:30-5:00.  We have Saturday office hours until 11 am and one doctor is on call for emergencies until 10 pm nightly and all weekend.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Our staff includes two full-time receptionists, five veterinary assistants, and two veterinarians.  Two fully equipped ambulatory trucks are used for farm calls.  Our building is 5000 square feet with three exam rooms, one large treatment room, kennel, groom room, recovery room, and office. Small animal surgery has two isoflurane machines and two stainless steel surgery tables, monitoring equipment and high-speed dental machine.  We have two large animal receiving areas. One designed for ruminants is complete with indoor headgate for c-sections, LDAs and routine surgeries and medical treatments.  The equine room has stocks, a padded knockdown room, and a hydraulic surgery table.   Diagnostic imaging is performed using portable x-ray, digital x-ray, and ultrasound.  Our in-house lab contains Idexx Lacercyte and Catalyst Machines, and we use Cornerstone Software. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

We would like for students to come for at least a week at a time.  They will have the opportunity to shadow/work 40-60 hours with the veterinarians.  They will learn surgeries, medical procedures, and examinations and the level of their involvement will be based on their ability and comfort level.

Students may stay at Dr. Crank's home in a spare bedroom at no cost.
