Crocker Animal Hospital, LLP, KY

Description of Elective Experience:

Students will be involved in all aspects of our very busy mixed animal private veterinary practice. We have a tremendous case load in both pet animal medicine, surgery and preventative health care. We will pattern the student experience to fit the interests of the student. Our practice also sees emergency cases for our surrounding counties. Our small animal surgery cases include orthopedics, canine reproductive surgical services and a range of abdominal surgical procedures (splenectomy, explores, ANA, etc.) Our large animal service involves bovine, equine, ovine, caprine and porcine preventative health care and reproductive services. The student will have the opportunity to work with all of our doctors or choose to primarily work with the doctors that are in the student's primary area of interest. We have been a clinical rotation site for LMU and host student preceptors often from several veterinary colleges.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

State of the art small animal hospital that includes 2 surgical suites, dentistry suite, ICU, CT and 3D imaging, digital radiography, ultrasound, 6 exams rooms, doctor's library, canine rehabilitation therapy room with underwater treadmill, small animal isolation unit, large treatment area separate from ICU and surgical suites and standard boarding and grooming facilities. Our large animal facility has bovine haul in working area and lab along with pasture turn out, stalls for hospitalized cases and a lameness exam round pen. The large animal service also has three ambulatory vehicles to run out calls. Large animal practice also has ultrasound, powerfloat dental equipment, digital radiography and BSE lab.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We expect the student to be available for 45 average hours per week with at least one weekend on duty to assist the emergency on call doctor. We are very flexible on days worked and will tailor the schedule to the student's needs. Our intent is to allow them to assist the staff and doctors in medical and surgical case management. The student will be paired with a doctor each day to work with. We will also expect the student to scrub in for surgeries, assist in developing case management plans and communicate with clients where appropriate.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Free student housing provided either in the main small animal hospital or the large animal facility. Both places have showers. Laundry can be done at the small animal hospital. The large animal facility has a full kitchen if the student wishes to cook. Both places have refrigerators, internet and TV. We prefer that students do not bring pets if at all possible. Prior approval must be obtained.
