Description of Elective Experience: 

We are fairly flexible here.  The student will show up between 7:15 and 7:30.  Help with surgery for 2 hours and then either shadow one of the doctors during appointments or help with treatments depending on what is more educational at the moment.  The student will be quizzed verbally on cases during the day.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Cross St Vet has two full time doctors, six RVTs, 18 total staff, digital x-ray, ultrasound, dental table, Idexx in house chem, CBC, digital cytology, UA, etc.  Nine exam rooms, treatment room, separate x-ray room, and a large surgery room.  Our hospital was completely remodeled in the last two years and is well equipped with all of the latest equipment.   We use a radiologist  in Virginia.  We do bone plating here, but send out TPLOs to a board certified surgeon.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

We are open Monday - Friday from 7:30-5.  Surgeries are performed by both doctors from 7:30 - 9:30.  Appointments  are from 9:30 - 11:30 and 1-4:30.  The student can shadow either doctor during appointments or  help with treatments whichever he or she likes. During the surgery he or she will help prepare the patients for surgery and can observe surgery.
