Eagle's Nest Animal Hospital, VA

Description of Elective Experience:

Eagle's Nest Animal Hospital is a small animal veterinary hospital in King George, VA. Since opening in 2007 we have built our client base through excellent medical care, relationships with the community - including animal control and rescue leagues, fair prices, and the availability to pet owners stationed at Dahlgren Naval Base roughly 12 miles away. Eagle's Nest, led by owner Samantha Judge, DVM and her two associates, offers clients small animal wellness, surgery, reproductive services, dentistry, oncology, digital X-Ray, acupuncture, herbal medicine, grooming, and boarding. During the externship the veterinary student will gather experience in these areas of veterinary medicine through shadowing and hands-on support, including assistance with surgery. The student will also observe how we thrive as a doctor-owned practice in a heavily populated but rural setting. This externship is full of practical experience especially fit for a student looking to work in small animal medicine.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Our animal hospital currently has 19 employees, including 3 doctors, 1 groomer, and variety of support personnel.  Our hospital is unique in that on a daily basis there are 10 to 14 staff dogs present. The intern will have the opportunity to use our doppler ultrasound on staff animals or actual cases, as well as our Sedecal VetRay digital x-ray, Abaxis chemistry etc. There is also an opportunity on a weekly basis to learn firsthand about acupuncture and on a rolling basis oncology, reproduction, and emergency medicine.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Resposibilites will vary with the candidate.  The least involved opportunity will entail shadowing. Likely the experienced candidate will participate in a mix of shadowing, seeing appointments, performing minor procedures, scrubbing in on surgeries, performing spay/neuters on animals for local rescues, and helping routine and emergency medical cases as they are presented. Our hospital is open M-F 7:30AM-6:30PM. Doctors are typically onsite from 8AM until approx. 5:30PM. The intern schedule will roughly match those hours.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

The opportunity exists for the candidate to arrange housing through us with our various staff. This typically includes a private bedroom, a bathroom, and kitchen and laundry access. Pets will be considered on a case by case basis. Candidates may arrange this by contacting our hospital prior to externship approval. Every effort will be made to place the candidate in a home where they are most comfortable.
