Emergency Animal Hospital Of Collin County, TX

Description of Elective Experience:

The student will have the opportunity to spend 40 hours or more with a veterinaria in an ER situation.  Whatever shifts they decide to work we will assign them to a DVM that they can go into exam rooms, discuss differentials, come up with treatment plans, assist in surgery, evaluate diagnostics and be as involved as they would like to be.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have 3-4 DVM's on at all times except in the day when we have one from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm.  We have digital x-rays and send all of our x-rays out to Idexx.  We use Idexx blood machines.  Use sevo gas anesthesia.  Have acces to a CT machine.  We have 2-3 technicians per DVM on each shift.  We do not have a criticilist at this time.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

The student can set their own hours but would expect at least 40 hours a week.  The student would be involved with cases but not be handling any cases on their own.  Depending on their ability they may be asked to so some laceration repairs under the supervision of one of the DVM's.
