Equine Medical Associates (PSC), KY

Description of Elective Experience: 

Multi-veterinarian equine ambulatory practice located in central Kentucky practicing on large and small breeding farms, primarily thoroughbred.  Work includes reproduction, radiology, imaging, lameness, internal medicine, emergency management and herd health.  Our case load also includes sport horses of all disciplines and racetrack work at Keeneland Racecourse and surrounding training facilities.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The practice has multiple diagnostic imaging devices available for use in the field including digital radiology machines, ultrasounds, and video endoscopes.  Additional therapeutic treatments provided by our practice include a RLT laser, Magna Wave, therapeutic ultrasound, Game Ready and Soft Ride soaker boots.  Students will have access to resource materials in our office of EVE and AVMA journals, AAEP proceedings, AAEP Convention on DVD. ISELP DVD series, books on lameness, ophthalmology, parasitology, reproduction, surgery and medicine.  Informal daily rounds, the opportunity to attend KVMA and Univeristy of Kentucky lectures for equine practioners and access to office computer.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students will be expected to participate in all activities during their visit with the clinic.  Total hours per week will vary depending on the season.  During breeding season and sales, students will work 12-14 hours a day, 7 day per week.  Weekend work will vary depending on the time of year.  Most time will be spent observing cases with participation ranging from passive to active depending on the case and student.
