Description of Elective Experience: 

The goal at Equine Services is to provide students with an opportunity to learn and gain knowledge in many aspects of equine medicine outside of the university setting.  We strive to be as hands on as possible for our veterinary externs depending on the students education level and knowledge level.  Externs are actively able to participate in treatments and examinations of our hospital patients (with supervision), are able to assist doctors with procedures on ambulatory calls and able to participate and observe diagnostic and surgical procedures in the clinc.  We are a busy hospital and ambulatory practice that services a wide range of clients and offers immense services.  Dr. Scott Bennett has an extensive lameness practice and externs are able to assist him in a wide variety of cases.  Equine Services also has an extensive reproductive practice and during busy season externs can observe mare and stallion services, including embryo transer.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

We are a full service Equine hospital that is staffed 24/7.  We have three full time associate veterinarians, one part time associate veterinarian and 2-3 veterinary interns. A board certified veterinary ophthalmologist (Dr. Erica Tolar) works to see her equine patients out of our clinic.

We have a full surgical suite; a 3T MRI; nuclear scintigraphy; 3 Cuattro digital radiography units; power denistry equiptment; 5 digital ultrasound units; video endoscopy and gastroscopy; Pulse Vet shockwave unit; magnawave; Artemis laser unit; theraplate

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

The clinic is open from 8-5 Mon-Friday, 8-12 on Sat; The typical day at the clinic start between 7-7:30 depending on case load and time of year and ends when 6 pm treatment are completed.  Ambulatory calls generally start around 8 am and run until they are completed.  The student can take part in after hours emergencies if they choose during their externship.  Depnding on the preferences of the student and the schedule at the clinic for the day, they can choose to stay and participate in hospital procedure and cases or can choose to go on ambulatory calls.  

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

We have a free on site dormotory style room (depending on number of extern may share room with 1-2 other people) with bedding provided.  There is a small lounge area with a small kitchenette and a full bathroom adjacent to the room.  There is a washer/dryer available for use. There is internet service available for use. Grocery shopping and restraunts are available within 10 miles of the clinic.
