Equine Veterinary Dental Services, OH

Description of Elective Experience:

Student's time and clinical caseload will vary between on farm routine and primary care dentistry to haul-in referral dental surgeries.  The amount spent in each type of clinical setting will vary depending on scheduling and the students desired type of cases.

Student's will be allowed hands-on time to learn and perform oral examination, sedation techniques, motorized float & odontoplasty procedures.  Depending on experience, skill level, and case load learning dental radiographs and nerve block techniques is also likely.  Most two week blocks would allow opportunities to be involved with 1 - 6 dental extractions and several periodontal cases.

We are a fully furnished dental only practice with equipment for routine dentistry and standing dental and oral-maxillofacial surgery.  This includes extractions, sinus surgery, jaw fracture repair, dental restorations, and endodontics.

Our facility has one set of stocks for standing surgeries and two horse stalls.

We are equipped with flexible endoscopy for airway examination, oral rigid endoscope, and digital radiographs.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Patient appointments are typically schedule for 8:30am-4:00pm.  We strive for our staff and doctors to have a 8:00am-5:00pm workday including drive time to and from farm calls.  We offer after hours care only for dental emergencies which are rare and can typically be seen the next day.  The student would not be expected to have any evening or weekend duties.  Students will need to dress for outdoor weather conditions and bring food with them each day.  There are very limited choices to buy lunch near our clinic and farm calls are similar.

Student's will be encouraged to participate as much as possible, you can expect by the end of the externship to have independently performed multiple oral exam and routine floats.

Attire can be clean jeans or slacks.  Acceptable shirts include a scrub top or polo and other layers depending on weather, horse appropriate footwear is expected.
