Ethos Veterinary Health, MA

Description of Elective Experience:

Ethos is a group of specialty referral and emergency care practices, with locations in New England, Denver, San Diego and Chicago.  We welcome student externs.  Externs will actively participate in daily hospital rounds and case discussions. We want to hear your thoughts and questions about cases, and appreciate the perspective you will bring. You will also have opportunities to observe outpatient receiving, emergency case management, hospital treatments, surgery, diagnostic procedures and client communications.  Because the program is intended to be observational rather than hands-on, you will not be doing surgery on your own, receiving patients or having primary responsibility for treatments.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Resources:

As part of your externship experience, you will be able to access our online learning management system, VetBloom, which includes a comprehensive library of journals, among other resources.  Most hospitals will have an on-site library of textbooks as well.  We strongly encourage you to research cases so that you can participate in discussions and thus maximize your learning opportunity.

All locations have high quality technicians, which include VTS technicians in many locations.  All have digital radiography, endoscopic equipment, ultrasound...  In addition, many locations have CT and/or MRI, reference labs or point of care lab equipment.  We have clinical pathologists on site with our reference labs in San Diego and Woburn (MassVet).

We have active internships in multiple locations, and an externship is a great way to see those programs in action.  Please contact the people listed above by location for information about internship opportunities.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Expectations:

  • Attire: Please wear professional clothing, such as you would wear for clinical rotations at school.  You should plan to bring scrubs for work on the surgery or emergency services, and your lab coat for client facing work.  Be sure to bring your stethoscope and wear a name tag.
  • Schedule: In general, plan to be at the hospital at 7:50 each morning.  Some locations may have rounds that begin earlier in the day, so please be sure to check in about start times.  You should plan for a minimum of a 5-day time period if your externship is for academic credit (please note that OSU CVM requires a 2 week rotation).  If you are visiting to check out an internship program, you may visit for a day or two.
Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

We do not have formal housing available for students, but often can help find options for students who would like that.  Please inquire about that when reaching out to the externship coordinators described above.
