Description of Elective Experience: 

Fairfield Equine Associates is an equine practice based in Newtown, CT that practices in Connecticut, New York, Masssachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Ohio, Colorado, Arizona, and Washington.  Five months of the year the practice has 2 to 4 veterinairians in Wellington, FL.  

Externs live and work at the Newtown, CT hospital facility.  A two bedroom apartment is provided for living and the extern is involved with the care or patients in the hospital and with the ambulatory practioners.  Externs assist with treatments and patient care, assist with admittance of emergency and after-hours emergencies, anesthesia and surgery and see routine cases and emergencies in the anbulatory portion of the practice.  

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

The practice consists of 11 veterinarians (3 of whom are interns) and approximately 20 staff members.  The hospital is a 14,000 square foot facility with 12 stalls in the main hospital and 4 stalls in the scintigraphy barn.  The hosptial has a standing, low-field Hallmarq MRI, scintigraphy,  and multiple digital radiography systems, ~8 ultrasound systems, portable endoscopy and gastroscopy systems, rehabilitaton (Class 4 laser, shock wave, FES system) systems and a technician dedicated to rehabilitation care.  Elective and emergency surgical care are provided.  

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Extern students rotate among the veterinarians in the practice during their time and assist with the care of hospitalized patients. They ride with veterinarians on after-hours emergency calls and assist with admitting after hours emergencies

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

A two bedroom apartment at the pracice is provided at no cost for extern housing.  The apartment includes a private bathroom and kitchen.
