Description of Elective Experience: 

Student will shadow and assist veterinarians in both clinic and ambulatory settings. Student will co-examine patients, discuss diagnosis/plan with veterinarians and assist with diagnostic procedures and/or treatments. Student will work with a variety of equine, bovine and small ruminant patients. Type of cases will likely include preventative medicine, theriogenology, sports/ regenerative medicine as well as routine medical, surgical and emergency care. Extern will have the opportunity to practice routine procedures ( power dentistry, passing NG tube etc ) on clinic-owned animals if desired.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Two veterinarians, one veterinary assistant and office staff. Clinic with haul-in and hospitalization facility. Digital radiography and ultrasound, power dentistry, airway endoscopy, in-house lab including automated fecal analyzer.

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Monday-Friday from 8AM until end of regularly scheduled day. Saturday morning attendance and participation in some after-hour calls will be encouraged but not required. Extern will gain hands-on experience but will be closely supervised at all times.
