Description of Elective Experience: 

We are a private mixed practice with a large haul in case load as well as several trucks with mobile units for farm calls.  We see a variety of species with the majority being beef cattle, a large number of equine, a fairly large number of goats, a few sheep and  pigs, and occasionally backyard chickens.  Student will experience receiving these cases, processing cattle, working a variety of haul in cattle and horse trailers from routine preventive medicine to lameness exams of bovine and occasionally equine cases, breeding soundness of bulls, pregnancy checking cows and sometimes mares, routine surgical cases, and going on some farm calls.  Student is welcome to participate in small medical and surgical cases if interested.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

Clinic has 1 small animal doctor, 1 part time small animal doctor, 4 large animal doctors, and 2 doctors that do both small and large animal practice. Clinic also has several small animal vet techs and small and large animal technicians.  Large animal facilities include several ultrasound machine for equine and bovine reproduction, 2 power floats for equine dentistry, portable X-ray machine, and 2 hydraulic chutes, one of which is a tilt chute for feet work, and serum analyzer for in house bloodwork. 

 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Student will have hands on opportunities depending on student’s  abilities, knowledge, and confidence level.  Clinic hours are 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and 7:30 am to 12:00 pm Saturday.  Student is welcome but not expected to be available for after hour large animal emergencies.  We are very flexible if student has family or school related commitments that might interfere with daily work schedules.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Dorm room in clinic at no cost to student.  Student may bring pet if discussed with supervisor prior to arrival.
