Description of Elective Experience:

General practice with a broad range iof cases ranging from kitten wellness exams to geraictric full workups with the possiblity of referral to a secondary institution for surgery, dermatology. ophthamology, internal medicine, neurology, and other specialists in the area.  We draw from cases within the entire Portland Oregon/Vancouver, Washington metro area, because this practice has existed since 1977 and has a far-reaching reputation.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Basic general practice hospital with standard radiology, dental, surgical and hosptial buildings compliant with AAHA specialty practice certification (we are an AAH feline Specialty practice).  Referral to another nearby tertiary care is commonly used to facilitate approprate diagnostic workups with close-coordination of care between hospitals.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We have the students arrange a schedule that includes hours comparable with those of our doctors so they learn what it feels like to work a real week with real, scheduled time off.  Lunches are taken as required by law, and we try to schedule so the student has two days off back to back to rest, recover, and learn how to mange free time outside of clinic time.  Students observe initially, and can comment, or ask questions as appropriate.  As they gain familiarity and comfort we will have them perform surgeries or procedures felt to be within their abilities and with minimal risk to patients.
