Commercial chicken egg-producing operation based in central Minnesota. Student will work with company veterinarian approximately 40-50 hours a week. Evenings and weekends are not required. Student many have the opportunity to spend time practicing clinical skills with other employees if scheduling permits. Student will travel with veterinarian or other employees to conventional and cage free pullet and laying hen farms in Central MN. Travel times within the company’s MN holdings will range from 10-90 minutes. Daily routines include flock wellness exams, sample collection for ongoing management trials, meetings with various company stakeholders, informal consultations with farm managers and other company stakeholders, and record writing and data analysis. Student will observe Forsman Farm’s veterinarian’s approach to flock health management and have opportunities to practice flock record keeping techniques as much as possible. Student will be assigned a data-management project to complete as time allows.
Work week is Monday-Friday, 40-50 hours as needed. Off hours work is rare and not required. Student will experience a mix of shadowing, conducting exams and related record keeping, and data collection and analysis. Veterinarian will arrange for student to work along side veterinarian and conduct own exams and create records as mush as possible.
