Description of Elective Experience: 

This elective experience is open only to 4th year veterinary students who are current members of the US Army seeking Active Duty Training (ADT) experience during their clinical year.

Fort Belvoir Veterinary Center is the referral center for Military Working Dogs (MWDs) and Government Owned Animals (GOAs) for the Atlantic Regional Health Command Territory (entire East Coast and parts of the Eastern Midwest). Interns gain experience working with government animals consisting mainly of working dogs with possible experience with working equines. Experiences can include but are not limited to assisting with surgery, performing physical exams, assiting with medicine workups, participating in handler medical training, participating in Soldier training, and participating in clinical management.

1 boarded medicine specialist

2 boarded surgeons

1 boarded critical care specialist

1 surgical suite equipped with cautery and orthpedic capabilities

Endoscopy/bronchoscopy

Currently 5 veterinary interns

2 regular DVMs

10 technicians

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Students are expected to participate in any activities that are taking place that day (noted above). If more than 1 activity is happening, they are free to choose what they participate in. Dependent on the activity students will shadow or provide actual support. Students will work approximately 40-60 hours per week and participate in physical training per Army standards. Students can participate in on-call emergencies if they choose.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

Army supplies all costs associated with housing. Student will likely be staying in on-post hotel. Not pet friendly.
