Goals of the Externship: To provide a wide range of exposure to various aspects of equine practice; provide a safe, positive learning experience; provide opportunities to discuss cases and ask questions. Students in their final year who are considering applying for the internship should consider the externship as a working interview.
GVEC has 4 veterinarians and one intern, an office manager, barn manager, 2 licensed veterinary technicians, and 5 clinic assistants. In addition to the main clinic building there is an 8 stall hospital barn, turn out paddocks, and riding ring. Veterinarians utilize 2 digital radiology and 2 digital ultrasound machine for imaging purposes. There are 5 practice vehicles equipped for ambulatory work.
Estimated Externship Workload: Students will ride out on ambulatory calls with each of the practice veterinarians. To obtain the maximum educational value from the externship, the student should be available to go with the DVM on call on evening and weekend emergencies. Hands on experience will be limited depending on the case, what the supervising veterinarian deems appropriate, and the client's consent.
GVEC offers students space in our lounge area at no cost. There is a futon, access to a bathroom/shower, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, and toaster oven. There is no conventional stove/oven. There are also laundry facilities in the building. This area is a work space during office hours, so does lack privacy during those times. We do not accept pets during a student's externship.
