Description of Elective Experience:
An opportunity to gain exposure to a wide range of cases in a private equine practice; provides opportunities for hands-on experience as well as case discussions with DVMs & LVTs.
Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:
- 6 DVM practice
- 2 LVT, Office Manager, Barn Manager
- 2 digital x-ray units
- 3 digital ultrasound units
- extensive vet text library
- archived journal articles library
- monthly vet meetings with journal club
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:
- assist LVTs with packing trucks, performing labwork & patient care
- assist DVMs with routine & emergency appointments - 8 - 12 hours/day on farm calls , evening and weekend emergencies
- restrain horses/foals
- assist with diagnostics & treatments
- participate in case discussions
Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):
A futon, full bath, laundry facilities and basic kitchen (microwave, toaster oven, refrigerator/freezer) is available in the clinic lounge area. Privacy in this area is limited. Offered free of charge. No facilities for accommodating pets.
