The Grand Island Animal Hospital is part of the Buffalo Veterinary Group, 6 private practices with two locations being open 24/7 for emergency and general care. The Grand Island Animal Hospital is one of the general and urgent care facilities. We expect senior students to participate in office calls, surgery, rounds, and patient care. Each day, the senior student will be assigned to a doctor, and the student will be able to observe and participate.
There are 3, full time, general practitioners, and 6 rotating emergency doctors. All of our practitioners are general practitioners, some of which have special interests (emergency, behavior, ultrasound, surgery, acupuncture, hematology, physical therapy), but no one boarded.
All of our practitioners receive regular literature - JAVMA, Clinicians Brief, Feline Medicine, Vet Clinics North America, DVM 360, Team Brief. Each hospital has a database of articles from 2010 forward of JAVMA, and Vet Clinics of N. America, and a full library of books from each aspect of care (i.e. anatomy, physiology, hematology, internal medicine, surgery, ophtho, neuro, etc) Morning rounds occur daily. CE: monthly Buffalo Academy for 9 months/year (national speakers are recruited for these meetings), we pay for associates to attend national meetings/specific training sessions (i.e. ultrasound course). Our doctors meet once monthly - presentations of new products, discussion of cases, professional updates, discussion of standards of care, etc.
Participate in the examination, vaccination, diagnostic, treatment, and care process. The clinician will go over their logic in approaching the case and discuss the students' logic in approach. We like students to assist and participate in surgery. We will look for Ohio State to dictate areas the student is not legally allowed to participate.
