Description of Elective Experience: 

Grants Lick Veterinary Hospital is a growing, fast paced, small animal hospital.  We have been in business since 1962.  We opened a new 10,000 square foot small animal hospital in Alexandria, KY in October 2018.  We currently have a team of 5 full time and 2 part time doctors.  Students doing their elective experience with Grants Lick Veterinary Hospital will have the opportunity to work with our collaborative team of veterinarians thru outpatient appointments and surgical procedures.  A typical day at Grants Lick Veterinary Hospital includes roughly 10 surgical procedures and roughly 50 outpatient appointments per day.

  • 3,000 square foot boarding facility in Alexandria, KY (Across the parking lot from the veterinary hospital)

  • Support staff of 30+ (including managerial team)
  • I think any of our doctors would say that our veterinary team is always learning and collaborating with one another on cases, which in turn creates a great educational opportunity.
Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Veterinary students would be expected to be professional, reliable, and ready to learn.  Weekly hour expectation would be 40 hours per week.  Our hospital hours are Monday-Thursday 8am-7pm, Friday 8am-6pm, and Saturday 8a-2p.  Our veterinary externship experience is very hands on.  Students can expect to work along side of and collaborate with our doctor team with surgical cases as well as outpatient appointments.  Student will be responsible for charting medical records, communicating with clients, performing physical exams, just to name a few!

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

We have a studio apartment within the veterinary hospital that is available for use by the student.  This apartment includes small kitchenette area with microwave and refrigerator, private bathroom and shower, bed, and small sitting area.  The hospital does offer Wi-Fi throughout.
