Description of Elective Experience: 

GLVC is a 24 hour, 7 day week emergency facility.  Expectations of the clinical student are to function similar to clinical floor with active participation in rounds on inpatients, primary case management from triage to discharge under close supervision of the shift ER doctor, basic emergency procedures under the direct supervision of the shift ER doctor, and elective assistance in major emergency procedures/surgeries.  Our facility also has direct resources of a boarded cardiologist and ultrasound group and indirect resources of a boarded internist.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

full medical library, web access, boarded cardiologist, internist, and ultrasonographer

digital radiology, in house CBC/chem/UA, cytology, coags, FAST U/S (separate from ultrasound service)

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

4 X 10 hour swing shifts weekly (We have discussed Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday), which provides exposure to 2 ER doctors per day

Case management at student's pace under close to direct supervision, including SOAP, dismissals, and referral letters, which must be pre-approved by supervising ER doctor

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info): 

If needed we have a fully finished basement of owner's home with direct egress.
