Green Glen Equine Hospital, PA

Description of Elective Experience:

The extern can expect to have a wide variety of experiences depending on the time of year.  We will provide hands on experiences including  assisting with diagnosis and treatment of cases.  Assistance with daytime and evening emergencies is a great way to learn.  We have rounds weekly but all doctors discuss cases daily as needed and you will participate in these discussions.  We will attempt to provide a well rounded experience but will also allow some time for the extern to putsue their interests.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

Green Glen Equine Hospital is currently a 5 vet practice with ambulatory and hospital facilites.  We were established in 1968 and have been offering similar services since then.  Our current staff offers services of acupuncture, chiropractic, reproductive and surgical services by a  boarded surgeon.   We have a heavy concentration on sports medicine but do all types of ambulatory work. We have a newly renovated office with surgical suite and 2 induction/ reocvery stalls.  Support staff consists of 9 people currently of which two are certified techs.  We have multiple DR units, ultrasounds ( repro and other), shockwave, Video scope ( gastro and upper airway), IRAP, PRP, Prostride, Lameness Locator, in house lab and many other tools to help provide good care.  We have two barns and hospitalize as needed.  Most of the surgery caseload is elective.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Externship is offered for 2-4 weeks.  Hours are expected to be 8-5 these may be extended as caseload dictates.  Assistance with after hour emergencies weekdays and weekends are an excellent learning tool.  At least one day off per week will be provided, especially for longer externships.  Assisting with treatments, SOAPs, performing and functioning with the current vets as an intern would.  As the vets becomen more comfortable your responsibilities and expectations may increase.
