Griffin Avian and Exotic Veterinary Hospital, NC

Description of Elective Experience:

Students are involved in clinical cases from initial history taking through formulating rule out lists, diagnostic and treatment plans and follow up care.  Interaction with office staff as well as clients is required.  References are available for students to borrow during their time here, including custom handouts on a variety of species.  Patient handling techniques, diagnostic sampling techniques and therpeutic techniques will all be covered during a student's time with us.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We are an avian and exotic pet hospital, seeing only birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and exotic companion mammals.  We are currently staffed with 2 doctors (both full time) and 5 support staff.  We are equipped with radiography (still developing films), surgical suite with radiosurgical unit, endoscopic unit (Stortz 2.7 mm rigid), patient warming devices, incubators and hospitalization cages. Advanced imaging can be referred out as needed.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Students are expected to be at the hospital during the regular hours (M, T, Th, F 8am-6pm and W 8am-1pm) and encouraged to help with weekend treatments (up to 3x/day on Saturday and Sunday depending on the hospital census.  As stated above, they are expected to watch as well as take part in discussion concerning PE findings, possible diagnostics, treatment options and execution of these possibilities.  Some students may want to focus on a certain area of interest and are welcome to present a short projuect to the staff during their time here.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Housing may be provided (case by case basis) - if that cannot be worked out, there are extended stay hotels that may be reasonably priced.  We try to host our students at the home of one of the doctors whenever possible.  Details would have to be worked out in advance, obviously.
