Gunnison Valley Animal Clinic, UT

Description of Elective Experience:

We are a busy 2 doctor mixed animal practice in rural Utah.  We are 50% small and 50% large animal.  One doctor specializes in cattle and small animal while the other doctor specializes in horses and small animal.  We hope that this elective will give the student a broad array of real-life experiences that they might encounter in private practice.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have 2 doctors and 8 other staff.  We have focused on keeping our equipment and services up to date.  We recently upgraded to digital radiography, we have 2 portable ultrasounds, a brand new surgical laser, in house blood chemistry and CBC machines.  We have 2 surgery areas with isoflurane anesthesia machines and patient monitoring.  We are a full-service veterinary clinic with after hours emergency services as well.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

We would expect the student to be an active participant in any/all activities at the clinic - from routine exams, vaccinations, surgeries etc. to farm calls, herd work, equine exams etc.  We are willing to allow the student do as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. We have a good clientele who would not mind letting a student work on their animals. Clinic hours are Monday thru Friday 8 am to 5:30 pm.

Student Housing (include costs, amenities, pet friendly, contact info if different from elective contact info):

Dr. Sorensen has a spare bedroom and bathroom in his basement that is available for free as long as the student can tolerate his 4 young and wild children!!  No indoor pets, but outdoor are fine.
