The student will spend two weeks mainly with the staff veterinarians practicing surgery and shelter medicine. They will be given the opportunity to perform spays, neuters and other soft tissue surgery. They will be asked to work up cases in the shelter given our limited resources. They will be asked to make medical decisions (under supervision) regarding infectious disease that will take into account the general population of the shelter. They will be rotated through the different services at our shelter - Adoptions, Education, Behavior, Animal Husbandry, Admissions, Clinical services and Surgery.
We have two full time veterinarians, as well as a host of per diem veterinarians that rotate through our shelter daily. We have in house bloodwork as well as digital radiography. Our surgery suite houses two surgery tables, and our surgery prep area has wet tables where extensive dental work is performed.
The student is expected to be at the shelter approximately 40 hours per week and will be getting as much hands on training as possible. Our schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. They will be under direct supervision of a staff veterinarian unless they are observing a different department. Over the two week period, the majority is spent with the veterinarian.
