Description of Elective Experience: 

Experience working in a private, 501 (c) (3) non-profit humane society managing the shelter animal population in Charlotte, North Carolina including both felines and canines. The extern will be shadowing and assisting the shelter veterinarian with population management, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases as well as managing individual animals on a case-by-case basis. The extern will be managing cases such as heartworm disease, parvovirus, ringworm disease, respiratory disease and more. In addition to shelter medical experience, the extern will also shadow and perform high-quality, high-volume spay neuter surgeries of the shelter animals. Lastly, depending on the case load at the time, the extern may be able to partake in the anesthetic planning, surgery and post-op recovery to special surgeries such as enucleations, cherry eye repairs, laceration repairs, tail amputations, front limb/hindlimb amputation, wound repairs and more. 

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.: 

4 DVMs on staff. 3 RVTs on staff. Numerous VAs on staff. 6 table OR with multiple prep stations, recovery beach and dental table, dental cleaning unit (high and low speed equipment), and dental radiograph capabilities.  In-house x-ray machine as well as in-house ultrasound. 

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?: 

Monday through Friday 9AM - 5:30PM with 30 minute lunch. Hours may vary depending on case load. 

Both shadowing and actual support. 

The student will be responsible for providing medications in the mornings and completing follow ups with the medical team. If there are veterinarian exams to be completed, the student will assist and complete veterinary exams on animals in the shelter as needed. 

The student will assist in surgery and complete spay/neuter surgeries on shelter animals as the head veterinarian sees fit depending on the student's experience level. They will be directly supervised by veterinarians also in surgery. 

For special surgeries that arise from medical cases at the shelter, the student will be responsible for creating an anesthetic plan, monitor anesthesia or partake in surgery as the head or assistant surgeon depending on the case. The student will be responsible for monitoring and recovering the patient post-operatively. 

The student will be responsible in completing their SOAP notes for all cases and inputting them into Petpoint. 

The student can shadow and assist with the intake process with the intake team as well. This includes visiting and pulling animals from several surrounding shelters.
