Humane Society of Huron Valley, MI

Description of Elective Experience:

There is opportunity for involvement with our High Quality/High Volume Spay and Neuter (HQHVSN) service, outpatient surgery, community cat (feral) surgical services, outpatient clinical services, and shelter.  In addition, externs are able to obtain hands-on experience with dentistry and occasionally wildlife handling, cruelty and rescue work, or adoption services within the shelter.  Externs are mentored by our group of eight veterinarians and are encouraged to self-evaluate their skills at the start of the externship and again at the end of their time with us.

Institutional and Educational Resources - staffing, equipment, etc.:

We have a relatively large staff of veterinarians (eight), vet assistants, and licensed veterinary technicians as well as several hundred volunteers working in shelter and adoptions.  We have digital radiographs, digital dental radiographs, in-house chemistry/CBC, multiple vaporizers, incubators, a mobile vet unit, a 250 capacity shelter, a humane education center, and extensive dog-walking trails.

Student Responsibilities - what is expected of students in terms of hours, days of the week, shadowing or actual support?:

Externs are expected to spend 40 hours a week during the weekday with occasional opportunities to work with puppy transports arriving from other states which would replace the time spent in clinic if the student has interest.
